Seek Him for Yourself - Marlene Custer
Recently I was reading about Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. After talking with Jesus, she ran back to her village to tell her neighbors about Him. In spite of the woman’s reputation, they wanted to see Jesus. What I found most intriguing, was their response after having talked with Jesus. They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:42 NIV) When people experience Jesus for themselves, their lives are changed.
You may ask, “How can I experience Jesus?” The best way is through reading His Word. As the Israelites were getting ready to go into their Promised Land, Moses admonished them, “If from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 4:29 NIV)
Solomon, speaking for Jesus, declared, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” (Proverbs 8:17 NIV) His father, David, knew, and had stressed to him, the importance of seeking God.
God spoke through Jeremiah, the prophet, to the exiles in Babylon, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV)
When we find Him, our next step is to obey His words. The writer of Psalm 119 challenged, “Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.” (Psalm 119:2 NIV)
The writer of Hebrews warns, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV)
“God, I want to know You for myself, not just by what others say. Help me as I read Your Word and meditate on what it says. Please give me understanding. Thank you, amen.”
